Ripley Running Club – Runner of the Week

Name: Ian Warton-Woods

Time as a member: 6 Years

Reason for the Award: For services to the club and the committee. Unwavering commitment and always there to help new and old alike. Travelling a long way for week night runs and getting stuck into pretty much all of the running events from cross country through to fell relays.

Getting to know you in 5 questions:

1) Most Memorable Running Experience: Probably some of the trips with the running club. In 2016, we sent a team to the fell relays in Scotland. Very tough race but great weekend. Waking up at 2am to get to Scotland for the start of the race then staying at a pub afterwards, such a good laugh. Also, trips to do the Snowdon marathon have always been fun.

2) If you could compete in any race/event tomorrow. What would it be? Would love to do a big city marathon like New York or a trial race abroad in somewhere like the Alps. Also, I have done the Great North Run 4 times and would love to have done it for a 5th time this year, if it wasn’t for Covid.

3) Favourite local running route? Around Ripley, I would say Butterley Res and nature reserve or Waingroves woods. A route that I have done across the fields towards Denby is another favourite. Slightly further afield, Shining Cliff Woods or around Cromford is great for running. However as I have moved to ‘hilly’ Nottinghamshire, there are some great off road routes from a pub called the Boat Inn in Hayton near Retford, also living close to the Trent, it is always nice to run along the river.

4) Best bit of advice you could give anyone about running? Don’t do too much, too soon. Enjoy your running by mixing it up a bit, some road, trails and fells. Embrace the social side to running and mix with different people.

5) What got you into running? Initially running was a means to get fit and keep fit. However the day after coming out of major surgery, I told some friends that I wanted to do a marathon. This prompted me to join a running club. The club helped helped me train for London Marathon in 2015, for which I am grateful and hence love giving back what I can to the club and the running community as a whole. I believe running has enormous mental and physical health benefits and would recommend it to anyone.
